Look Effects, a Hollywood-based visual effects company whose credits include The Life Aquatic, The Passion of the Christ, Malcolm in the Middle and CSI: NY, has completed work on The Power of Film, a promotional trailer produced by Kodak.

The piece was produced by Peter Gardner and created, directed and photographed by Bob Gordon of Flying Tiger/Form, who has compiled more than 300 commercial credits, including many award-winning spots for an array of sponsors, including Nike, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet and Sony. The editor was Bob Jenkis of Mad River Post in Santa Monica.

The Power of Film is designed to demonstrate the aesthetic advantages of producing visual stories on film, Gordon says. Film offers an extraordinary range of exposure latitude and an ability to record an extreme range of colors, contrast and textures that evoke emotional responses. It is a pliable medium that can be manipulated in post.

The Power of Film was produced at locations in California, New Mexico and Nevada. Scenes include a curious child looking through a magnifying glass at a spider web, a dramatic primitive night fire dance, beautiful mountain vistas at dawn and dusk, and other shots which demonstrate extreme contrast, time-lapse and skin tone comparisons. The film also demonstrates various lighting conditions and camera techniques.

Look Effects worked with Gordon and Jenkis on four shots involving visual effects compositing techniques using flame software by Discreet. Most of the visual effects shots were multi-layered composites of color corrected green screen and plate elements. For the final shot of the film, Look Effects composited multiple layers of star and sky elements to produce a dynamic night scene that leaves the audience with an enduring, beautiful memory.

Look Effects brought an artistic sense to the table, Gordon says. It was truly a wonderful experience partnering with an effects company that contributed to both the technical and creative aspects of this project. Their work is flawless and seamless. It has to be, since filmmakers all over the world will see the trailer. It has tremendous emotional power.

Jenkis agrees and adds, Ive worked with Look Effects before and find them to be a top-notch organization with excellent artists and compositors.

We were honored to have been selected to work with Bob Gordon, Bob Jenkis and Kodak on The Power of Film, says Mark Driscoll, Founder and Executive Producer for Look Effects.

Seeing is believing, says Gayle Barnes, Executive Producer on the project and Worldwide Marketing Manager, Entertainment Imaging Division, Kodak. Together, Bob Gordon and Bob Jenkis demonstrated the unsurpassed magic of film as an origination medium for storytelling. Projects originated on film can follow many paths through postproduction and be displayed in all film and television formats, while retaining the nuances of the original images. Look Effects helped us bring Bob Gordons vision to life.

The Power of Film will be seen at select film festivals in 2005. For more information about Kodak, visit www.kodak.com/go/motion.
