How to Reset, Refocus, and Finish the Week Strong

By Jody Michelle Solis

Hey Filmmakers,

Welcome to your midweek check-in—a moment to breathe, reflect, and realign before the week races away.

Whether you’re managing a student film crew, finishing post-production on your indie short, or mentoring in a creative classroom, this is for you. No shame, no hustle guilt. Just a grounded, honest look at how to move forward in a way that honors your craft and your capacity.

And hey—tomorrow is Good Friday, with Passover also underway, so your schedule might look a little different. Whether you’re observing a holiday or catching up on work, this is your reminder to pause with intention.

Creative Goal-Setting for Filmmakers: Real Goals, Real Life

At the start of the week, we introduced a 3-tier goal method for filmmakers:

  • Essential (must-do)
  • Elevating (improves your work)
  • Extra (nice to have)

Now’s your chance to review—not to pressure yourself, but to connect with what’s really working.

Instead of focusing on what didn’t get done, ask:

  • What creative wins did I experience this week?
  • Did I grow as a filmmaker, teacher, or collaborator—even slightly?
  • What pulled my energy unexpectedly, and what refilled it?

That’s real filmmaking productivity: progress rooted in awareness, not perfection.

Stay Focused by Batching Your Creative Energy

One of the top mistakes in the film industry (especially for multitaskers): switching gears too often.

If you’re jumping from script edits to lighting setup to answering student DMs to emailing producers… you’re not alone. But bouncing tasks burns out the part of your brain that makes your best work.

Here’s how to reclaim your flow:

  • Batch creative work into focused time blocks (e.g., editing mornings, admin afternoons).
  • Use your calendar like a film schedule: block scenes (a.k.a. projects) with care.
  • Protect your attention like you protect your gear—both are essential to the craft.

This simple shift helps filmmakers reduce overwhelm and boost long-term creative focus.

Avoid Burnout: Schedule Your Off Button

Creative burnout in the film industry is real. And it’s sneaky.

So, if you’re wondering whether to pause tomorrow—or carve out some quiet time this weekend—here’s your confirmation. Rest isn’t retreat. It’s recovery. And it’s part of being a sustainable creator.

Even 30 minutes of something non-film-related—cooking, walking, playing music, reading something random—can reset your system.

If you’re observing Passover or taking Good Friday off, lean into the rhythm. If you’re working through, plan your recharge time just as intentionally as you plan your scenes.

This Week Doesn’t Have to Be a Highlight Reel

Let’s be honest: not every week ends with a festival submission or perfect footage.

Sometimes the win is that you didn’t quit. Sometimes it’s that one edit you finally nailed. Sometimes it’s just showing up, teaching the class, backing up your files, or realizing you need to slow down.

Wherever you are—you’re still on the path. You’re still creating something real.

So, before this week wraps:

  • Celebrate the smallest spark of momentum.
  • Write down one creative insight you don’t want to lose.
  • Remind yourself why you fell in love with this craft.

Because filmmaking isn’t just about what you produce. It’s about how you live inside your process.

Final Frame

Whether you’re heading into a holiday weekend or prepping for another full shoot day, give yourself this:

Clarity. Compassion. One small reset.

Your best work doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from remembering who you are as an artist and how much power lives in each intention you bring to the table.

So set the mood. Light the scene. And make something meaningful—on your terms.
