Filmic Announces Partnership with Swinburne University of Technology in Australia; First to Leverage Filmic EDU Program to Bring Mobile Filmmaking Techniques to Students

The Filmic Education Program signals Filmic’s passion for inspiring new generations of mobile filmmakers and storytellers by empowering them with tools and resources they need to master their craft. The newly-launched Filmic Education Program offers qualified students and teachers accessible pricing as well as the resources they need to develop and follow intensive mobile filmmaking curriculums.
Filmic Inc. also announced today that it has partnered with Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne Australia as the first university to participate in the Filmic Education Program. With the assistance of the program, the university can expand its in-depth Mobile Filmmaking curriculum for its students. Swinburne University is world renowned for creating innovative programs for its students and is in an optimal position to deliver a world-class Mobile Filmmaking program.
The program will be led by Max Schleser, Associate Professor in Film and Television and a researcher in the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies (CTMT) at Swinburne University of Technology. As well, he is an Adobe Education Leader, Founder of the Mobile Innovation Network & Association (www.mina.pro) and Screening Director of the International Mobile Innovation Screening & Smartphone Film Festival.
In his career outside of the University, Associate Professor Schleser is an award-winning filmmaker with expertise in immersive media, documentary film and creative arts 4.0 with a focus on cinematic VR and interactive filmmaking. His research explores screen production, emerging media and smartphone filmmaking for community engagement, creative transformation and transmedia storytelling. He co-edited the books Mobile Media Making in an Age of Smartphones, Mobile Story Making in an Age of Smartphones and Mobile Storytelling in an Age of Smartphones, and edited journals for Studies in Documentary Film, Ubiquity, the Journal of Pervasive Media and the Journal of Creative Technologies. His monograph Smartphone Filmmaking: Theory and Practice was published by Bloomsbury in 2021. Max Schleser’s mobile feature film Max with a Keitai (2007) screened at film festivals internationally and is included in the public film archive in the Forum des Images in Paris (France). His smartphone documentary feature Frankenstorm (2014) broadcasted on CTV, Canterbury Television (Aotearoa/New Zealand).

– Quick Action Modals (QAMs)
– Quick Action Modals (known as QAMs, and pronounced “cams”) offer fast access to key functionality at the top level of the UI, and are designed for quick adjustments that do not require jumping into settings;
– Many of these QAMs offer a highly requested feature – numerical input. Now filmmakers can type in an exact value for ISO, shutter speed, and white balance temperature for failsafe results and pinpoint accuracy.
– Action Slider
– Action Info Slider provides a real time readout designed for professionals who want to monitor their ISO, shutter speed, white balance, minutes remaining of record time, capture format, and gamma curve;
– The UI reinforces locked states for ISO, shutter speed, and white balance;
– These visuals can also be hidden or revealed at any time.
– Custom Function Button
– Filmic Pro now offers a dedicated custom function button in the main camera interface. The filmmaker
can map one of dozens of key features to this button for fast access.
– Interface Redesign
– Newly refined, streamlined interface;
– New tangerine reticles with improved lock/unlocked state animations;
– All new dedicated Mode Button which makes all supported modes explicit to the filmmaker (auto mode; center weighted reticle mode; reticle mode; manual mode);
– Simple and Professional Audio Meters: Tap the on screen audio meter to switch between preferred presentations;
– Dedicated Audio Control button in main UI;
– Redesigned Manual Controls: Filmic Pro V7 moves away from arcs to sliders with more explicit pull to point functionality. The slider travel is also longer for more precision and accuracy, and inertial scrolling is now supported, which enables faster “flicking” to Macro or Infinity. Exposure controls are also decomposed to better reflect professional cameras (Filmic Pro now offers three exposure modes on the left hand manual slider: LV (iso and shutter speed concurrently per v6); ISO only; and shutter speed only).
– Revised Settings Menu
– Filmic Pro offers a redesigned Settings menu that consolidates key functionality (for example ‘Resolution’ and ‘Frame Rate’ menus from v6 are consolidated under a `Video` menu).
