Filmmakers Network Spotlight: Edward W. Salerno Jr.

Meet Edward W. Salerno Jr., a grip based in New York / New Jersey and a member of the StudentFilmmakers Filmmakers Network. See Edward’s Network profile to connect.

Work:

A variety of non-union music videos, infomercials, and independent TV specials in varied positions from Grip, Electric, Gaffer, Lighting Designer, Camera Operator, Camera Wrangler, Camera Utility, and DP.

“I have been drawing and painting for years and what I do with whatever I am working on, I want to make those films and videos to be fine art.”

Favorite Lighting Technique:

“A favorite technique I have used in a few projects has been Night-for-Day. When I first had to try this it was extremely difficult with small lights that were available to me at school. The trial and error of this technique when I first tried it really showed me even more to light. I learned to really look at my lighting.”

Favorite Tools:

“The eye-brain system, imagination/artistic sense, light meter, and a crew.”

Challenge and Solution:

“The most unique challenge to date had been creating my thesis project and with four months of work and ready to roll into production – the schedule did not work for the actors. As the solution for this challenge I decided to go with another project in mind. Along with my long time collaborators on projects, Crystal and Jason, and new collaborator, Ryan, we created something much better than the other project and did this great turn around with amazing results.”

Current Projects:

“Recently I have graduated and been preparing my thesis short film The Janitor for short film festivals. Also I have been looking for freelancing opportunities. I am currently looking to collaborate on future projects, shorts, and features with other passionate filmmakers.”

Short Film, The Janitor:

“The Janitor is about a janitor, named Bert, who is forced to work an extended shift brought on by his boss, the curator. Under the pressure of the curator, he must work in the contemporary art wing – a wing he has never worked in before. I was the Cinematographer, Co-Writer, and Producer of the short film. I wanted to shoot something I could be happy with as my thesis project.”
